Swimming in the Forbidden City
The bow cannot always be drawn for the Russian soldiers who camped in the forbidden city of Wünsdorf during the Cold War.
In the southern wing of the "Haus der Offiziere" there is an indoor pool and sauna.
In 1936 the infamous Olympic Games took place in Berlin, a huge prestige project of Hitler at the time. It was therefore extremely important that his athletes could perform as well as possible and prepare in peace.
Partly for this reason, a large swimming pool was built at the Haus der Offiziere, where the Olympians could train.
There was also a gigantic boiler house, of course an extensive sauna and a relaxation room.
The swimming pool was renovated, adapted and modernized by the Russians in the 1950s.
This meant that the balustrade on the side (above the yellow air outlet) was removed, so that the pool lost some of its charm.
The indoor pool has an area of about 200 m2 and is up to 3 meters deep.
In 1994 the Russian officers took their last jobs here.boiler houseIn a side building are the coal-fired boilers for heating the indoor swimming pool.outdoor swimming poolThe 50-metre pool is located in the backyard of the Haus der Offiziere.
No more sunbathers around the outdoor pool, but weeds have sprung up, cracked tiles and a puddle of rainwater in the cockpit: the ideal breeding ground for biting mosquitoes.
