Exploring forgotten places across Europe

Visit 2024

Deep beneath the surface, a world once existed that never slept.
Thousands of workers disappeared underground every day, surrounded by roaring machines, steel structures, and the constant rhythm of industry. What was once a symbol of progress and hard work slowly became a silent reminder of a forgotten era.
After decades of activity, tragedy struck. A devastating explosion deep inside the mine revealed the true dangers hidden below the surface. The disaster left scars that would never fully heal and marked the beginning of the end for an industry that had shaped generations of families.
When the final machines stopped, an abandoned world was left behind. Massive halls, rusted machinery, and endless corridors have remained frozen in time ever since, while nature slowly reclaims what was once built by human hands. Sunlight now breaks through shattered windows where smoke and sparks once filled the air.
Among the dust, rust, and silence, the past can still be felt.
As if the place was never truly abandoned.
As if the echoes of voices and machinery are still hidden somewhere between the concrete and steel.
A place where history slowly fades away… but never completely disappears.

During the major mining disaster in 1985, 22 miners lost their lives. In addition, more than 100 people were injured by the explosion deep underground.
The tragedy is still remembered as one of the most devastating industrial disasters in French mining history and became the last major mining catastrophe in France.
