Abandoned Powerplant
Visit 2025
Deep within Belgium’s industrial heartland, the Blue Powerplant once supplied energy to a massive steel and coke production complex that shaped the region for more than a century.
Powered by coke gas from the surrounding factories, the plant became an essential part of an industry built on fire, steel and hard labor.
As the European steel industry declined during the late 20th century, the factories slowly shut down and thousands of workers lost their jobs. Eventually, the powerplant itself fell silent, leaving behind towering turbines, abandoned control rooms and rusting machinery frozen in time.
Today, the Blue Powerplant remains one of the most iconic abandoned industrial locations in Europe — a haunting reminder of Belgium’s industrial past, where silence has replaced the noise of machines that once ran day and night.
